My Key IssuesGovernment EffectivenessThe effectiveness of any organization, especially State Government, is measured by the results or outcomes of its work. All of us are impacted in many personal ways by the bills and laws that are passed in Austin. Much of my business career has been devoted to helping organizations improve performance. I will apply this experience in Austin at the legislative level and align the interests of the people, and businesses in District 129 with the bills that are passed in Austin. EthicsYour ethics are revealed by "How you behave when no one is watching". It would appear that ethics in politics have become inconsequential to some politicians; they behave badly even when people are watching. The tragedy is not the laws they break, but rather what they do that is not against the law. Full compliance with all ethics, law and regulation is necessary to restore public confidence in elected officials. I fully believe in high ethical standards for personal and institutional behaviors; I will work to restore trust to the political arena and will always be accountable to my constituents. Spending At State LevelAs a Republican and business man I know good government and effective business is about practicing fiscal responsibility. Our current legislature has increased spending rates (19% in 2005 and 20.7% in 2007) much faster than inflation or population growth. We need people who are fiscally conservative and who will not spend in the present only to sacrifice the future. I have lived and worked through many changes in our state's economic condition and recognize the need to balance our present needs and avoid future shortfalls. Government would like for you to think the money they spend is theirs; remember it is your money. Immigration and SecurityWe are a Nation of Laws and our history teaches us that compliance to laws whether voluntary or involuntary is one of the keys to our success. It would appear that many laws are being intentionally overlooked, including our laws to protect our borders and our communities from illegal aliens. To avoid chaos and many unintended consequences, we must enforce our laws. I will work tirelessly with all levels of government, including our cities, to monitor and ensure compliance with laws. I will be proactive in leading efforts to enhance the ability of Texas to control it own borders and identify solutions for the problems subsequently created by illegal immigrants now living in Texas. Citizen RepresentativeI do not view myself as a politician but rather as a citizen who chooses to serve. Should you honor me with your vote and support, I will represent District 129 by actively listening to concerns and issues facing our families, our businesses and this great state. I will take the time to meet face to face with anyone in the district, conduct an open door policy in the local office, and welcome constituents to Austin to participate in our Government. Trans Texas CorridorThe TTC "Recommended Preferred Corridor" as presently proposed by TXDOT starts in Texas at Nuevo Laredo and cuts a 1200 ft. wide path to Shreveport, Louisiana. The corridor will contain rail, highways, utilities, and pipelines; access and development will be controlled by the Corporation winning the contract. When Texas land owners do not agree to sell their property to TXDOT, eminent domain will be used for right of way. I am opposed to the Trans Texas Corridor as proposed and will work to stop its progress. Margins TaxOur legislature passed House Bill 3 that established a tax on gross revenues of certain forms of business, with little consideration for the cost of doing business. Companies can actually lose money and still pay taxes. I will work to repeal the Margins Tax, revise the Franchise Tax to close loop holes and spread the tax burden broadly and thinly, thus returning Texas to its business friendly status.
